Healthy Smoothies and
Why They Are So Good For You!

green smoothie

  • Did you ever think that healthy smoothies could taste good with green stuff?
    • Do you get your 5 to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables a day?
    • Did you ever think to incorporate the 5 to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables into healthy smoothies?
    • When you hear people discussing raw foods, or live foods as some call it, does it make you think of rabbit food?
I thought so! It sounded very boring, devoid of taste and pleasure.

There was a point in my life I experimented with juicing. I had a difficult time sticking with it. I never really enjoyed the recipes I made and my juicer was a pain to clean. That is not to say that juicing is not good for you or that you could have a better juicer for cleaning!

Over the years, in some part of my brain, I was curious to find out more on the benefits of raw foods. It so happened there was an evening seminar, recently, that my daughter invited me to at the local health food store. The topic was "Beautiful On Raw" and the speaker was Tonya Zavasta, who is a very dynamic and passionate speaker. She had me sitting on the edge of my seat, listening to her story. At the end of the presentation, she gave each of the attendees a sample of her "green smoothie" that is one of her favorites. It looked like green pudding and I thought "Oh dear….do I want to drink this??" Well, to my surprised taste buds, this healthy smoothie was quite tasty!

And, so the quest for Healthy Smoothies started! I have been doing quite a bit of research to find out more about green smoothies, and also, the added benefits of raw foods.

How many servings of fruits and vegetables do you eat in a day?

The government recommends 5 to 9 servings a day for good health and most of us are not even close to that. The bio-medicine.org website states that; "The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend that adults consume 3.5 to 6.5 cups (7 to 13 servings) of fruits and vegetables daily and children eat 2 to 5 cups per day (4 to 10 servings) depending on their age. "

I am finding it much easier to incorporate all those servings into my healthy smoothies!

While research indicates that more than 50 percent of adults know they need to eat five or more servings of fruits and vegetables per day, more than 90 percent of all Americans do not eat the recommended amount.

Consider this recent study sponsored by the Produce for Better Health Foundation, a nonprofit nutrition-education group:

  • 3% of the more than 2,400 people polled said they eat no fresh fruits or vegetables.
  • Nearly half said they think they eat just one or two servings a day.
  • Just 12% said they think they eat the suggested five or more servings.
  • The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says adults should get close to 9 daily servings for maximum health benefits.
  • The National Cancer Institute, while urging adults to get at least 5 a day, promotes 9 a day.
  • With that being said, how much easier it would be to incorporate the 5 to 13 servings per day recommended with green healthy smoothies.

The healthy smoothies which are Green Smoothies are simple and easy to make! Take any fresh greens you like and blend them with fruit.

I have found the quoted ratios to be quite varied.
Some say 70% greens with 30% fruit.
Others say 60% greens with 40% fruit.
Others say 40% greens and 60% fruits.
Others just add the ratio they like. I go along with that theory.

Most of the time when I experiment with a new recipes for healthy smoothies, it is about a 50/50 ratio. If it tastes bitter to me, I add a little more fruit.

I suggest that you experiment and come up with your own combination for healthy smoothies. There are no rules or regulations to making your own green healthy smoothies . I look at it this way……….if you are getting extra greens in your diet, you are already further ahead. Be sure to check out the healthy smoothies listed on the Healthy Recipes page.

    KEY POINTS DURING MY RESEARCH:

    • Green healthy smoothies are a complete food. Because of the fiber, the fruit sugars are absorbed more slowly.

    • When you eat cooked (enzymeless) foods, you put a heavy burden on your body, which then has to produce the enzymes missing in the food. One of the reasons you feel lethargic or sleepy after a cooked meal is because the body is diverting its energy to replacing the enzymes that were not supplied.

    • Uncooked foods digest in 1/3 to 1/2 the time of cooked foods. The stress of creating and replacing enzymes, meal after meal, day after day, year after year, greatly contributes to accelerated aging.

    • Green smoothies versus juicing, are a complete food because they still have fiber.

    • By consuming two or three cups of green healthy smoothies daily you will consume enough of greens for the day to nourish your body, and they will be well assimilated. Many people do not consume enough of greens, even those who stay on a raw food diet. The molecule of chlorophyll has only one atom that makes it different from a molecule of human blood. According to teachings of Dr. Ann Wigmore, to consume chlorophyll is like receiving a healthy blood transfusion.

    • Greens nourish every cell in your body and brain. Yeah! Brain power!

    • The late Dr. Jensen proved in The Healing Power of Chlorophyll that if you're anemic or tired, Green Smoothies will quickly raise your red blood cell count. The core atom in Green Smoothie is magnesium (in human blood it's iron). Cravings are often a sign of magnesium deficiency. Green Smoothies are the best food to end your addiction to cakes, cookies and chocolate. When your body gets the nutrients it needs, cravings go.

    • Green Smoothies are rich in alkaline minerals like calcium

    • Green Smoothies are a perfect food for children of all ages, including babies when introducing new food after mother's milk. Be careful and slowly increase the amount of smoothies to avoid food allergies.

    • Did you know, this is the best-kept secret in the capitalized world? That the richest source of protein for humans is green leaves? Leaf protein is easy to digest, easily assimilated into the tissues, and has none of the harmful side effects of flesh protein.

    • Green Smoothies contain all essential amino acids. Green Smoothies are a good source of Omega-3 unsaturated fat. Greens need to be consumed daily in salads, smoothies, or cooked dishes and are best consumed raw or steamed. Leafy greens deliver vital nutrients like calcium, B vitamins, vitamin C, and Omega 3's. They contain soluble fiber and nutrients with anti-cancer properties. They help to control sugar cravings and help to alkalize the body.

    • Curbs your afternoon cravings for sweets.

    • People often say it costs too much to eat healthy. I used to think so too. However, what costs more, a banana or a candy bar? An apple or a slice of apple pie? How much do you spend for a Starbucks latte? Raw fruits and vegetables actually costs less than those just mentioned.

    • By consuming two or three cups of green smoothies daily you will consume enough of greens for the day to nourish your body, and they will be well assimilated.

    • Regular consumption of Green smoothies forms a good habit of eating greens. Several people told me that after a couple of weeks of drinking green smoothies, they started to crave and enjoy eating more greens. Eating enough of green vegetable is often a problem with many people, especially in children.

    • Delicious, power-packed healthy smoothie recipes are drinks that can replace any meal while providing the opportunity for healing of the cells.
